Inappropriate Thoughts About Fictional Characters

If you could hook up with a character from fiction, who would it be?

That’s what Nerve asked readers recently and it may not be surprising that some of the responses were surprising!

Books aren’t necessarily part of Nerve’s mandate, so some of the 15 fictional characters their readers said they wouldn’t mind taking for a roll in the hay included fictional characters from film and television. 30 Rock’s Jack Donaghy was near the top of the pile (and he seems to be pile-topping on just about every list made) as were Mystique from X-Men (not a surprise!) and Lewis Skolnik from Revenge of the Nerds. (Really?)

There were more surprises from fiction, though. The Fountainhead’s Dominique Francon inspired one reader’s lust and and another mentioned Terry Pratchett’s creation, Esmeralda Weatherwax. “She is tough, proud, smart, cynical, and like eighty-years old.” Maybe it’s just me, but that’s not a combination I would have figured would inspire lust. The inclusion of Batman and Holden Caufield, meanwhile, are interesting choices, but no surprise at all.

You can see Nerve’s fabulous 15 here. Meanwhile, what fictional character inspires your inappropriate thoughts? I’m guessing Twilight’s Edward Cullen. (Robert Pattinson, the actor who plays him, is pictured in character, above left. But, once again, I’m prepared to be surprised.)

Edward Cullen is not to my taste. I like a character with a bit more seasoning and many fewer teeth. Lee Child's Jack Reacher is another matter. Yum!

Jack Reacher, Lucas Davenport, Jondalar from The Valley of the Horses, Rhett Butler, Sissy Hankshaw, and Kip from The English Patient, though that may be because Naveen Andrews played him in the movie. Did I mention Jack Reacher?

Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon's wonderful novels. Of course. I'm surprised more people haven't said!

I was very surprised that Jack Reacher was not an immediate choice, but as you say Nerve is a different group. I would also add John Rain and Jamie from the Gabaldon books.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Lisbeth Salander or really almost ALL of the women in Steig Larsson's series. But especially Salander who seems like the entire package.

Faramir from Lord of the Rings. He's intelligent, loyal, brave and a total SNAG - the sort who'd remember your birthday and take you out somewhere nice and respect your needs. And talk about books.

And yummy!

Put me down for Jamie Fraser (Outlander series) as well. No one can compare to him.

If he is unavailable, however, I'm also open to Eric Draven (The Crow), Jean-Claude (Anita Blake series) or Detective Robert Goren (Law & Order: Criminal Intent).

And yes, I do like 'em handsome, brilliant, passionate and... occasionally... immortal.

Thank goodness I see lots of Jamie Fraser votes (from Diana Gabaldon books), and the mysterious, independant one-mystery-stand fellow, Jack Reacher. My friend and I often chat about who would make good actors to play these characters. I know great book-to-screen transitions can happen, just look at Tom Selleck for Jesse Stone ... perfect!

I am a sucker for the tortured villains and anti-heroes. My curent fictional crush (and it's a big one!) is Loki from the recent Thor movie. I have also carried flames for Anne Rice's Lestat de Lioncourt, Sesshoumaru from Inuyasha, and Severus Snape.

No love for speculative fiction?

Always swooning for the Prospero types like Captain Nemo. Guess this means I've got daddy issues.

Also yummy: Paul Muad'Dib from Dune, Helmholtz from Brave New World.

Peeta Mellark from the Hunger Games! (His birthday isn't mentioned, so if he's still 17 at the end of the trilogy, I'd just like to point out that I'm not so old that it'd be illegal.)

Sorry Katniss.
